Removal of 100 foot sycamore slows traffic for much of day

The take down of the sycamore at Douglas and Quaker tied up traffic much of Wednesday.  New Castle Public Information Officer Lori Sachare reported that a count of its rings revealed that the 100 foot tree was 154 years old.

The tree doctors the town called in got it right: although a small cave-mouth at the base of the tree is all that showed, the inside of the tree contained a cavernous hole nearly three feet into the ground.  It extended up into the trunk as well.
