On Sunday, May 25, the New Castle Quakers (15 and under) defeated the Pelham Diamond Buddies in the championship game of the 2008 Westchester Classic Memorial Day Baseball Tournament. The game was played at the Crossway Field in Scarsdale, with a final score of 5 – 0. Excellent pitching was provided by Matt Townsend and Steven Haynes. The rest of the team, Charles Biggar, Zach Csillag, Aaron Dince, Andy Diorio, Michael Guillaro, Gustavo Larramendi, Will Quish and Jason Segal all played every game of the challenging two-day tournament.
In the championship game, Andy Diorio put in a superb defensive effort in center field, which played a major role in shutting down the opposition. The Quakers were coached by Sal Galiani, Michael Rubenfeld and Michael Diorio. The team is coping with the loss of their long time coach, Pete Diorio, who lost a long battle with cancer several weeks ago. They are dedicating this summer to Coach Diorio and will be wearing his number on their uniforms throughout the season.
14U boys finish second in Memorial Day tournament
The New Castle 14 and under team came in second place after losing to Yonkers’ Police Athletic League team in the championship game of the 2008 Westchester Classic Memorial Day Baseball Tournament. The New Castle team was playing without two of its key players, but played very well throughout the holiday weekend. New Castle beat Yorktown and Scarsdale to advance to the final round of the tournament. The team, coached by John Wolff and Ian Church, both former professional baseball players, will be playing in the WPBA, or Westchester Putnam Baseball Association, league this summer where they are the defending champions.
11U summer travel team advances to championship game in Briarcliff Memorial Day Weekend Baseball Tournament
One of the two U11 New Castle Boys summer travel teams, the Thunder, entered the 2008 Briarcliff Memorial Day Weekend Baseball Tournament. Despite having only one practice as a team, the Thunder advanced to the championship game and received the Runner Up Trophy, losing in the final game to a very good Lewisboro team.
The Thunder advanced to the semifinals by avenging an earlier defeat by a tough Briarcliff team and then beating an equally tough Yonkers Police Athletic League squad by a score of 4 - 1. The Thunder, coached by Joe Raguso, showed great determination and sportsmanship in winning and losing. All the boys played well and are looking forward to more baseball this spring and summer.
