A new story to follow together—outdoors at the Burden Preserve

Bundle up, pack a snack

The Chappaqua Library and New Castle’s Parks & Rec Department have collaborated to draw young readers and their parents to the town’s Burden Perserve on Sheather Road to read as they walk and talk. On some of the huge trees and small bridges in the town’s newest park property are posted the pages of Once Upon a Twice by Denise Doyen, the story of a troupe of mice and their renegade rule-breaker, Jam Boy. Will his foolish bravery be his downfall?
This newly published book is brimming with wonderfully creative language paired with striking illustrations by noted artist Barry Moser. Families will be able to explore the preserve’s beautiful and shadowy trails as they follow the story, then leave a note in the comment book located at the end of the route. StoryWalk™ is an exciting initiative that combines a children’s story with a popular walking route. Children’s books are selected, the pages separated, laminated, and placed along a walking path at regular intervals so readers can follow the story as they walk the route. StoryWalk™ is a way to inspire parents, teachers, and caregivers to take young children on a short stroll that will be fun for all. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg- Hubbard Library.
