Five days a week, you will be greeted by familiar faces at the Twigs Thriftree Shop in Mt. Kisco.
Twigs is a volunteer group, founded in 1945, dedicated to raising funds for Northern Westchester Hospital and providing a variety of services to patients and community members. Of its 160 volunteers, active in nine different branches, more than 70 are New Castle residents. These women make tray favors, layettes, newborn caps and receiving blankets for maternity patients and cough pillows for surgery patients. In addition, they operate the thrift shop, fundraise and sponsor a benefit golf tournament in July.
Mary Santore, a founder of the Apple Tree Twig branch, volunteers for many reasons. “I like giving back to our community and this is a fun way to do that. The thrift shop serves people from all walks of life from the very rich to the poor. In the past, we have provided costumes for high school plays and helped music lovers find old record albums. It is especially satisfying to know that some of our customers are buying clothing here because this is the place they can afford.”
Holiday Boutique
The Twigs Thriftree Shop also sells gently used clothing and shoes for adults and children, toys, books, small appliances, house wares, jewelry and gift items. If you stop by the store, you will find they are currently in the midst of their holiday boutique, which features holiday dresses, Christmas decorations and gifts, some of which are brand new. All the money raised at the shop goes to the hospital, which makes the work well worth while to Santore and the other Twig volunteers
Twigs happily welcomes new volunteers who would like to help, either by working in the thrift shop pricing and selling donated merchandise or making items for hospital patients.
The thrift shop, a stand alone white building at 409 Lexington Avenue, Mt. Kisco, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday. If you would like to volunteer stop by the shop or contact Judy McGrath at Twigs, 666-6557. Donations are accepted by appointment.
