Editor’s Note: Although Low depicted himself as more comfortable expressing himself through his paintings than with words, he treated his audience last Saturday to a great story, his own story. A child of Chinese immigrants who observed the bustling life of the Bronx as an outsider, through the window of his parents’ hand laundry shop in the Bronx, he began drawing and painting at the age of five, and made it his life’s work.  Kids and adults had a chance to watch Low compose and refine a drawing on the spot, and to try out his Wacom tablet themselves. Award-winning author-illustrator, William Low will present two programs on Saturday, March 6th at the Chappaqua Library.  At 2:00 pm, he will read and discuss his interactive picture book Machines Go to Work

for 3-7 year-olds, demonstrating the interactive three-page gatefolds that extend each of the book’s illustrations in surprising ways.

At 3:00, Low will present a more sophisticated program for older children and adults, during which he will demonstrate and explain how he creates his artwork using a remarkable software program and pressure-sensitive screen to achieve the painterly effects in his books,

Old Penn Station and Chinatown

. Question and answer sessions and book sales and signings will complete each of the programs.

Low has been applauded for the emotional depth, color and texture of his artwork and his sensitive use of light.  Adults will appreciate the nuances of his artistry, while younger readers will rejoice that, “Low knows what works for kids who like their machines big and busy.” (Kirkus Reviews)
