A strong second-half performance led to an easy victory for the Greeley boys’ basketball team in their game versus the Rye Garnets on Wednesday night, January 20.

Greeley steadily pulled away in the second half after Rye had closed to within one point in the opening seconds of the third quarter.  Adam Honig’s 37-point scoring outburst – which included five treys – made sure that the outcome was never in doubt.

Greeley broke out to a 7-point lead, 16-9, at the end of the first quarter.  Honig and Matt Townsend accounted for 14 of the team’s 16 points in the quarter.  Townsend was also active on the defensive end in the first half, contributing three blocks (including two during the same Garnet possession) and two steals.  Second quarter scoring was more balanced as Billy Sadik-Khan and Justin Ciero combined for six points to go with two Honig’s three-pointers.  Rye scored a couple of late baskets, including an “and one” as the half expired, which allowed the Garnets to narrow the deficit to only three, 29-26.

In the second half, Greeley turned again almost exclusively to Honig and Townsend, who combined to score 28 straight points. A driving lay-up from Gibby Graves broke the streak with just under three minutes remaining and extended the Quaker lead to 18 points, at 59-41.  Honig also picked up four of his team-high five steals in the second half, when Greeley turned up the full-court defensive pressure.  The Garnets were able to find their shooting stroke in the last few minutes of the game, making four three-pointers to make the final score respectable.
