The Greeley boys’ basketball team won their fourth straight game on Friday night, January 29, soundly beating the visiting Somers Tuskers, 59-40.  Fans were treated to a break-out performance from sophomore Justin Ciero, who scored 10 of his 14 total points in the second half on a combination of drives and mid-range jumpers. Matt Townsend, who led all scorers with 17 points, collected 18 rebounds in yet another dominating performance on the boards.

The first quarter was a mostly back-and-forth affair that ended with Greeley up 13-9. Gibby Graves’ 4 points led a well-balanced attack in the quarter.  Robert Cross opened the scoring in the second quarter with two quick buckets for the Quakers. Unfortunately, the team went scoreless for the next four minutes and the Tuskers came back to tie the score at 17-all.  Greeley then clamped down on defense – highlighted by two blocks from freshman Harrison Brown – and went on a run that left them with a 23-18 halftime lead.

Five quick points from Adam Honig, including one of his 3 three-pointers for the game, pushed the Greeley lead to eight points in the first few minutes of the third quarter. About midway through the period, the Quakers began keying on Townsend and the Tuskers had no answer. Over the next five minutes, Townsend scored while being fouled four separate times. Three of the four “and ones” resulted from some terrific interior passing from Graves, Brown, and Billy Sadik-Khan.  As the third quarter wound down, Ciero led an assault that would push the Quaker lead from 11 to 18 points.  Ciero scored on a put back to end the third quarter scoring, then scored 3 of the 4 first baskets in the fourth period to put the Tuskers away for good.
