Girls’ Varsity Basketball: Seeded 4th of 21 in sectionals starting Saturday

The Horace Greeley girls’ varsity basketball team finished the regular season with an impressive 14-4 record under first-year coach John Alkalay. The Quakers earned a fourth seed out of 21 teams who made the cut for the upcoming sectional playoffs and the right to possibly play two play-off games at home.

The team finished strong, winning eight of their last nine games and are hoping for a larger than usual crowd at tomorrow’s first round of sectionals at the Greeley gym at 2:00 p.m. against the winner of the Suffern-North Rockland out bracket game. So be sure to include this exciting event in your weekend plans, and wear orange!

For those who have not seen the Lady Quakers play, the strength of the team lies in its balance and depth as demonstrated by the fact that seven different players have led the team in scoring throughout the season. The varying skills of the girls makes this a team whose whole is truly greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Yanna Jackson’s strong post play combined with Samantha Re’s consistent rebounding open up the floor for the perimeter game of Julia Kronenfeld and Nicole Berg, who leads the team in three-point field goals. Not to be overlooked is the excellent season of freshman Jackie Brett who is not only fearless in her drives to the basket, but has the skill to pull up off the dribble for a jump shot in traffic. Added to the mix are the speed of Andi Picker that creates havoc on defense and the hustle of Emily Taylor and Issy Berkey.

Notwithstanding their stellar record, the Greeley girls have not been shown much respect by the “so-called” experts on the Journal News sports blog, who have predicted that they will not advance past the first round on Saturday. Come watch the Quakers girls prove them wrong!
