Greeley parents invited to preview alcohol awareness program
Monday, January 11, 2010
Editor’s note: This week at Greeley is Alcohol Awareness Week. The Greeley Student Government and Students Against Drunk Driving and Drugs (SADDD) have organized a number of events to educate students about the dangers of alcohol and drug use. One of the activities is a school-wide assembly on Wednesday with speaker Michael Sarich, who will discuss how alcohol and drug abuse derailed his life and undermined his ambitions. Greeley parents are invited to a preview of his talk on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:15 p.m. in Room K110. A description of the week’s events in provided below in the letter from Student Council President Zach Ehrlich and SADDD Executive Jamie Warner.
Dear Parents:
Starting Monday, Student Government and SADDD will be coordinating an alcohol awareness week. This week of substance-abuse themed events represents a combined effort to both educate students on the dangers of alcohol and drug use and to actively involve the community in improving safety and responsibility at Greeley.
Students and parents will be able to anonymously share personal stories about how alcohol has affected their lives on paper bricks that will be displayed school-wide, and a number of informative flyers and banners will be displayed prominently in the cafeteria containing important information and statistics about substance abuse. Morning announcements and flat-screen monitors throughout the school will convey messages relating to the week’s theme. In addition to these public messages and calls for involvement, a speaker from the Teen Truth organization (www.teentruthlive.com/programs/drugs-alcohol/) will be showcased on Wednesday for the entire student body.
Teen Truth speaker Michael Sarich is committed to tell the truth about his past in order to inspire, educate and empower youth to tell their own truth and change their future. Ever since he joined Teen Truth in 2009 he has shared his gripping personal story with students, parents and educators around the US and Canada. Sarich, once a Major League Baseball prospect, has used Teen Truth Live as an outlet to turn his tragic fall into an inspirational platform that uncovers the truth and consequence about drugs and alcohol abuse.
Tuesday the 12th of January, at 7:15 p.m., parents are invited to preview Mr. Sarich’s presentation in K110. We are glad to offer this opportunity as a way of including parents in the events of the week, and we hope that seeing this event in advance will spark rich and meaningful discussions in households about the effects alcohol and drug use can have on individuals. We hope to see you there, as your attendance will help to make this a meaningful and memorable community event. (Please note there is a Board of Education Meeting that night so parents who wanted to could go directly to the meeting following the presentation.)
Sincerely,
Jamie Warner, SADDD Executive
Zach Ehrlich, Student Council President
