Twelve former Greeley athletes from as far as San Diego and Chicago joined forces to run in the 2nd Annual 13 Overnight Relay known as the Cape Relay.
The relay race is run 198 miles from Quincy to Provincetown, Massachusetts in 36 unequal legs by the 12-person teams. The Greeley Glory Days team took top honors by finishing first with a time of 23:30:05 (Yup, that right, 23 hours of running), nearly a half an hour ahead of the second place team. Each person ran anywhere from 14 to 20 miles in the combined three legs.
For the most part the team was composed of athletes from the Class of 2003. David Schneidman, Geoff Rubin, Terrence Higgins, Matt Murray, Sam Oher, Rosario Lardiere, Pete Zaitzeff, and Tom and Chris Donovan were the ‘03 contingent. Lee Rasamny represented the Class of 2002; Joe Donovan (the twin’s older brother) did the honors for the Class of 2000; and Coach Joe Kearns embodied the spirit of the Class of 1996.
What was especially great about this team effort is that they have never forgotten Horace Greeley High School and while running for the camaraderie, challenge and fun of it all, they raised $2020.00 for the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund (HGSF). Using Facebook and an extensive email campaign they asked for sponsorships and donations, which allowed them to contribute to the fund, while setting the course record.
David Schneidman ’03 noted that, “the time would have been better, but we beat the official timers to the finish on one leg of the relay and had to wait for them to arrive. Next year we aim to defend our title, break our record and raise more money for the fund.”
Michael Lardiere, past president of the Scholarship Fund and brother of runner Rosario stated, “It is fantastic that these guys keep the ‘Greeley Spirit’ alive by running together as a team and by raising money for the scholarships that help Greeley students attend college.” Elaine Krim, the newly elected HGSF president said, “We truly appreciate the efforts made by the Greeley alumni runners to raise funds for and raise awareness of the HGSF. We are proud of them and hope these runners inspire other Greeley graduates to help us raise scholarship funds.”
