Everybody deserves to live under a roof that doesn’t leak, in a house that is not mold-infested and has running water.
Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that works to build affordable and livable housing for those in need. Westchester’s Habitat for Humanity has been working with local families since 1988, and Horace Greeley High School has had a chapter of Habitat for the past six years. Current build-sites are located in Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Yonkers and Somers.
Our club is currently working with Habitat to build on sites closer to home in New Castle and Mt. Kisco. When we “go on a build,” all tools and supplies are provided. The work varies from demolition, to framing, to painting, and all volunteers (14 and older) are welcome to participate. (Although if you’re under 18, you’ll need to sign a waiver and get your parent’s permission).
Our local club at Horace Greeley High School holds fundraisers throughout the year. We’ve sold baked goods and sweatshirts at our school, but our largest annual fundraiser is our Silent Auction. This year we have more than 20 gift cards from local vendors, including a 60-minute Swedish massage, jewelry from ICD and Rhododendron and dinner for two at Cafe of Love. See our complete list below.
Since we can’t be out there everyday building houses for people in need, we do our best to make sure that there are always funds to support this work. Through our annual auction, we typically raise approximately $2,000, which goes directly to Habitat for Humanity Westchester to fund projects around our community. Please come to Habitat’s Silent Auction on May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Horace Greeley High School cafeteria.
