Dr. Kennette Benedict speaker at League Luncheon

Reducing the Risks of Climate Change and Nuclear Weapons

The “Doomsday Clock,” set at five minutes to midnight
May 8, 2009

Kennette Benedict, executive director and publisher of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, will be guest the speaker at the spring luncheon of the New Castle League of Women Voters.  The luncheon takes place Wednesday, May 20th, at 12:00 pm at Crabtree’s Kittle House, 11 Kittle Road, Chappaqua.

The advancement of technology has brought enormous benefit to our world, but also enormous consequences. The accelerating rate of climate change, and the arsenal of 24,000 nuclear weapons worldwide — 2,000 of which are ready to launch in minutes — pose real threats in the 21st century.  Dr. Benedict will examine what can be done to mitigate some of the worst impacts of climate change; prospects for reductions in nuclear stockpiles; and political developments affecting these issues. She’ll also look at nuclear energy, which sits at the fulcrum of climate change and nuclear arms; and discuss how we can engage in these important issues.  Q & A will follow her presentation.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (www.thebulletin.org) was founded in 1945 by scientists, engineers and other experts who created the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project. The Bulletin informs the public of threats from nuclear weapons, climate change and emerging technologies in the life sciences.  The setting of its iconic Doomsday Clock – currently at “5 minutes to midnight” – is a symbolic assessment of the world’s peril from these threats.

The cost of the luncheon is $38 per person.  Checks payable to LWV of New Castle—CEF may be sent to the League of Women Voters at 5 Round Hill Road, Chappaqua, NY 10514.
