Half of Wags & Whiskers’ front window panes are have been covered with an unpainted plywood board for a little over two months, ever since the day a woman from Pound Ridge stopped at D’Agostino’s grocery store and parked her Volvo “smart car” on the edge of the lot with its nose facing Lange’s Little Store.

The smart car has a pushbutton ignition. “You can get out, lock it, and yet it can still be in drive,” explained Christine Meyer, who was working at the shop that day. “And then, it ‘self-motivated’ forward and rolled down the hill right at us.” Miraculously, neither vehicle nor pedestrian crossed paths with the car before it crunched to a stop at the wall and window of the shop, shattering most of the panes now hidden by the plywood.
That was March 26, two months ago. The window hasn’t been replaced yet due to a difference of opinion between Encompass, the driver’s insurer, and the owner of the shop. Four different estimates have priced the repair at about $16,000; Encompass believes it should cost more like $8000. Wags & Whiskers will sit and wait it out.
