Whew! School tax revenues are not down in New Castle

Receiver of Taxes Jill Simon Shapiro reported with great relief to the town board at its regular meeting on Tuesday that unpaid school tax bills for the year 2008 numbered only 291, representing $3.19 million of a $96 million total.

Her relief was due to a comparison of these figures to the previous year’s, when at this same time 740 school tax bills totaling $6.13 million remained unpaid from a total of $90.3 million that should have been collected.  “Better than last year!” she proclaimed.

On hearing the news, the board shared Simon Shapiro’s wonder and relief. As taxing authority, the town remains the entity ultimately responsible for tax collection, whether of town or school taxes, and must “make whole” the school district in the case of a shortfall in collection.
