Letter to the Editor: Recent “tree experiences” may give pause to tree law revision

March 5, 2010
by Dr. Norman Foy

I admit to not having examined the new tree ordinance, and I won’t be looking at it soon.

My highest priority is getting the 60 or 70-foot oak tree out of my driveway and repairing the damage it caused to my house. I am a strong environmentalist, but as I look up the hill behind me and see a nearby tulip tree that dwarfs the downed oak, I wonder if the ordinance would permit me to take down the tulip tree in the interest of self-preservation. Those residents who had “tree experiences” in the recent storm may have similar concerns.

The public hearing on amendments to the tree preservation law continues at the town board’s next meeting, on March 9, 2010.  To read commentary from previous issues—including Supervisor Gerrard’s explanation of the amendments—click HERE.
