Letter to the Editor: Thank you for your help and support during the storm, from the bus lady

Dear Editor,

I want everyone to know how grateful I am for the support and understanding of the parents, first during the unexpected ice storm, and also during the most recent disastrous snowstorm.

The encouragement and gratitude of many parents far outweighed the few parents who screamed for me to get my buses out of the way or make them go faster; or the parent who shouted obscenities at me because it was inconvenient for her to have to take her child one street over to get the bus; and the parent who was annoyed when I called to ask if the tree was removed from her street so that the bus could go through.  (Her response was, “You are supposed to tell meI’m not supposed to tell you.”)

I am so proud of the way the bus drivers kept their cool as they maneuvered their buses over slippery roads, dodging trees and wires.  The great job that they did would not have been possible without the help of our police, who kept me advised as to what roads were blocked, and the Highway Department.  One of my drivers felt abandoned when she was stuck on Old Roaring Brook Road with students on board. Nick Oliveri, in town truck #14, passed her, saw her plight, turned the truck around, then plowed and sanded the road ahead of her until all children were safely at home.

The safety of our children is a team effort that includes school administration, the highway and police departments, our school bus drivers and our parents. I feel blessed to be in the community with everyone’s support.  On behalf of our school bus drivers, I thank you all.
