UPDATE—Letter to the Editor: Thank you, Pete

It was with great sadness that I read the article about the “firing” of Pete Zimmerman from the Rec football program. I know of few people willing to devote over 25 years of their time, energy and passion (voluntarily!!!) to building a program that has become such a part of so many children’s lives.
While I agree that the situation concerning the refs could have been handled differently, I bet all of us in this town can point to times when we handled situations in life less than gracefully. If everyone were judged by a snapshot of our lives or a moment when we might regret our own behavior vs. the totality of our achievements and contributions, there would be no one left to do anything - in Chappaqua or anywhere.
My children have not been involved in the football program - we are a baseball and (recently) softball family. Throughout the years, Pete has been there for us from supplying uniforms to showing up at the field to watch the games and cheer on our teams. Clearly he is passionate about ALL of our children.
Pete has deep roots in and an obvious love of our community. He does not deserve to be pushed aside as unceremoniously as he has been - even if it was always the plan to move the program in a different direction. He should have been included in some way.
Pete deserves our gratitude, appreciation and respect. For what it’s worth, Pete, thank you from our family.
