Millwood Task Force September Meets Thursday, September 4th
On Thursday, September 4, The Millwood Task Force takes up subjects including the proposed new firehouse, tax inequity, playing field construction on the Amsterdam site, review of the downtown Millwood area design plan, the proposed Mosque and a host of other topics of concern to the community. The MTF will convene at 8:00 pm at Fire Station #2 on Rte 134. As always, the public is invited to attend.
Millwood Fire Commissioners Hear from Bond Counsel
Efforts continue to reach agreement about size and cost of the proposed new Millwood firehouse—from a possible $6 million price tag on WENT’s 15,500 square foot building to a possible $13 million price tag for the 19,800 square foot building proposed by a majority of the commissioners. The August monthly meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners featured a presentation by attorney Tom Myers whose firm serves as bond counsel for many municipal entities.
While it is too early to pin down specifics, Mr. Myers described the normal procedure in arranging for a multi-million dollar bond issue which—after going to bid by the underwriters—must be submitted to the public for approval. He told the commissioners that the term of the issue, initially projected at 15 years in preliminary BOFC projections, would very possibly run 20 or 25 years. The commissioners are developing a five year financial projection for the district.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement the Planning Board expects to receive for review has been moving slowly and the BOFC now says the date of the informal hearing has been moved once again, this time to January of 2009.
Wallinger Advances to New Post
As the fall semester opens, Millwood and West End residents of the Ossining School District will be interested to learn that Elizabeth Wallinger, who had served as assistant principal at the Anne M. Dorner Middle School since August 2000, has been named as the new principal of the school district’s Claremont School. A district announcement stated that Ms. Wallinger was selected after an interview process that included a committee of teachers, parents, administrators and Board of Education members. She replaces the previous principal who resigned this summer.
Superintendent Phyllis Glassman stated “We are so pleased that Liz has accepted this new challenge. We know she will serve our fourth- and fifth-graders, their parents, guardians and families and our entire community well. She has impressed us with her focus on the whole child and on equitable educational outcomes for all.”
Wallinger has participated in the district’s English Language Arts Literacy Cabinet, served on several committees, acted as liaison for the Social Studies Audit Report, presented workshops to middle school parents and guardians, and coordinated many initiatives. More recently, she worked with teachers and administrators to develop the new Professional Growth Plan.
