You’re here to start a History Hunt
We hope you win a prize.
You’ll read some clues, wear out your shoes,
But always use your eyes.
This first clue takes you where they cooked,
So go downstairs and take a look…
And so begins the “Horace Greeley History Hunt.” Are you a treasure hunter at heart? Do you love to solve riddles and puzzles? What about unlocking codes? And how about geo-caching?
Are you a fan of “The Amazing Race”? If any of these adventures whet your appetite, then by all means come join the fun. The New Castle Historical Society is sponsoring this town-wide game as part of its year-long celebration of Horace Greeley’s 200th birthday.
We are especially welcoming family participation (all ages), although the game will be appropriate and fun for kids age 14 and up to play by themselves (or in teams!). Players will be led though the life and times of Horace Greeley, starting at the Historical Society (Greeley’s very own summer home) and quickly jumping out “to the field”. Be prepared to walk in and around town, follow maps, solve puzzles and search for caches. Each player (or team of players) will be given a Game Journal which will serve as their “passport” and will include some of the prompts and clues (other clues will be scattered throughout the gaming area … you will have to unearth them!). The journal will also serve as the place to make notes (very useful!) and the repository for the “history pages” that the players will receive at the end of each stage.
The game can be played anytime between May 1 and May 28. This should ensure that everyone will have plenty of time to finish the adventure, whether that is in one day or over several days or weeks. Players can do as little or as much as they wish at any one time. Just be sure to persevere so you can earn the prize at the end!
We are very proud to offer this game to the community FOR FREE! We hope that you will enjoy this game as much as we have enjoyed creating it. We have really had a blast.
Game play starts at The Horace Greeley House, 100 King Street, Chappaqua, NY. And the Historical Society will have extended hours for the duration of the game: 1pm-4pm every day.
Be sure to look for more information on game play on our website (newcastlehs.org). Or call 238-4666 if you have questions.
In the meantime, spread the word to all your gaming friends! We hope to see you soon.
