Last night, the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation gave a special commendation to the town of New Castle for its development of the Route 120 pedestrian path.

The walkway extends west along New York State Route 120 for approximately one mile, facilitating access to the business district, train station, Bell middle school and library.

The path is a five-foot wide, ADA-accessible concrete sidewalk that winds through natural areas and over two pedestrian bridges, one of which stretches alongside the Duck Pond, headwaters of the Saw Mill River.  Town Supervisor Barbara Gerrard received the award on behalf of the town and gave special thanks to Jerry Faiella and Penny Pederewski, “whose hard work made the path a reality.” The town has submitted a grant application to help finance its plan for a similar walkway from Route 117 and King Street to Old Farm Lake.

Susan Carpenter’s has lived in New Castle for 22 years and has served on the Open Space Advisory Committee, the Conservation Board, and currently sits on the Planning Board.

The Federation’s 35th annual awards dinner was held at the Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York.
