For merchants’ sake, sewer repair on South Greeley will be put off if at all possible

In a work session last Tuesday following a meeting with Chappaqua merchants, Supervisor Barbara Gerrard urged town board members to look hard at the schedule for capital improvements and, if the condition of the sewer line on South Greeley is in good enough shape, to put off its repair for another year.
The work was scheduled to begin in spring of 2012, but Gerrard told board members that the merchants along South Greeley deserve a break from the double whammy of the bridge construction in front of them and the parking lot re-do behind. The postponement is dependent on an re-assessment by the engineering firm that took a look at the sewer line by camera last year.
Instead, the town may turn its attention toward changes to Lower King Street. Plans for that stretch include changing the angled parking to the other side of the street and creating a pocket park where lower King meets Allen Place. Also in line for a re-do are the sidewalks on North Greeley and elimination of parking one side of the street. When both sides are lined with parked cars, two cars can barely pass on the street.
What a disaster!
When will the village stop being a construction site?
And they wonder why business is so bad downtown!!
Editor’s Note: Bridge due to open in November 2011.
I really try to shop local, meaning first Chappaqua and Millwood and then Mt. Kisco. But the construction has to stop, I cannot deal with it some days. And no more nail parlors and real estate businesses please.
What has happened to the character of the town? We’re now real estate agencies, nail salons, pizzarias and, soon to be, drug stores. We should learn from Pleasantville where the quality and seemingly thoughtful variety of downtown businesses has made the town a destination. I refuse to believe that the Town Board has no control over businesses coming in. Add to that the traffic and why would anyone come here?
