If you were driving around Chappaqua on Veterans Day last Friday, you may have noticed a lot of green clad girls frantically running up to houses carrying wonderful packages full of goodies. No, it wasn’t an alien invasion; it was Veteran’s Day in Chappaqua.
For the past five years, the Girl Scouts have baked and delivered goodies to Veterans and their families on Veteran’s Day to honor our own heroes here in town. Troop 1021, lead by Carol Maher, began this project as their Silver Award project five years ago.
A great experience was had by both the Girl Scouts and the Veterans as the girls had the chance to meet the Veterans and their families in person and ask them questions about life in Chappaqua a long time ago. From our own experience it was a great day and the girls loved meeting their neighbors who served our country so long ago.
Linda McGetrick has lived in New Castle for the past sixteen years and is herself a former Girl Scout Leader and mother of two former scouts and one present one. Her dad, David Doherty, is a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
