1978: The new Chappaqua Library opens with comfortable reading areas, an auditorium and all the amenities of modern library design.  Some patrons miss the cozy charm of the old library’s stacks.

There the librarians had carefully wrapped all the books in colorful wallpaper samples from the nearby paint and wallpaper store.  Ernest Hemingway wore a book jacket of rose buds and ribbons.  The Bronte sisters were outfitted in snappy checks and tartans.  Readers soon learned not to judge a book by its cover.
