Crazy-busy as she is with getting her gardens at Rocky Hills in order after yet another harsh winter, Henriette Suhr recently allowed herself a visit to the New York Botanical Garden to see “The Orchid Show: On Broadway,” running until April 25.

These Thespians of the floral world playing in the Bronx—over 300 types of species and hybrid orchids of every size, shape and color—are arranged in various horticultural stage-sets.  Climbing, cascading and drooping, they tease, please and shock visitors with their multifariousness.  Sunny and sinister, dainty and giant, Puritan and Baroque, this cast of characters makes a world on stage at the Botanical Gardens.

“I urge everyone, even people who do not have orchids themselves, to go and see the spectacular show,” said Suhr. “These magnificent flowers are sort of daunting even to gardeners, but there are many new varieties that are very easy to keep in a house. Orchids are a great joy and produce some of the longest-lasting flowers, up to three months.”

Her north-facing window above the kitchen sink is the place she keeps her orchids through the winter.  The bright light from the indirect sunlight and the moisture the creatures glean from everyday sink action is, she believes, the reason they have consented to performed beautifully all through the winter.

From Suhr’s kitchen window these pampered prima donnas will observe the slow return of spring to the brown disheveled gardens, and the undignified hustle and bustle of the clean up to prepare Rocky Hills for its own show opening in May, for two performances only.

The Garden Conservancy holds “Open Days” for Rocky Hills, 95 Old Roaring Brook Road, on Saturday, May 7, from noon to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 28, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.  To see Rocky Hills today, click HERE.

This lady did a wonderful thing donating her gardens to the county!  It will be a lasting legacy to the skill and dedication of her and her husband. To this day, she is out working on her property, seeking to make it ever better. Thank you Mrs. Suhr.
