Horace is looking for traveling companions this summer! Will you be one?

In a case on your left as you enter the lobby of the Chappaqua Library sits the image of a 19th-century man with a dignified expression, a black hat, a distinctive beard and an intense gaze that inexplicably seems to instruct you to “Go west, young man” (or woman). He is none other than Chappaqua’s own Horace Greeley.
But caption beneath his photo might surprise you:
“You’ve seen the roaming gnome. You’ve followed the adventures of Flat Stanley. You’ve found Waldo, over and over. This summer, we’re asking Chappaqua Library patrons to take HORACE GREELEY along with them wherever they go, take pictures of him in various locations and send the images back to us. We’ll map his wanderings for everyone to see – how far will Horace go??”
The famed editor, whose displayed image is taken from a lithograph of him in front of his Chappaqua farm, is ready, willing and able to travel with you and your family wherever you roam this summer. To participate, stop in at the New Castle Historical Society or ask the reference librarian the next time you’re at the library and receive a conveniently laminated Horace of your very own. Or you can download the image at the Chappaqua Library website, www.chappaqualibrary.org
When you’ve taken some Facebook-ready photos of Horace in distant lands, send them to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) (missing ‘a’ is intentional!) with “Here’s Horace” in the subject line. Photos collected from all participants will be posted to the library website and Facebook page. Horace’s globetrotting progress will be tracked throughout the summer. Let’s see how far he goes!
Samantha Wesner graduated from Horace Greeley High School in 2010 and just finished her freshman year at Harvard University, where she plans to major in history.
This program is sponsored in conjunction with the New Castle Historical Society, and laminated Horaces can also be picked up at that location as well as at the Library. Let’s see how far Horace will go!
