January’s “blue pot” month at my house.

Most days my kids head straight to the kitchen after school, lift the lid of my cast-iron enameled Dutch Oven while asking “What’s in the blue pot today, Mom?”

In fact, throughout the month of January, it seems the blue pot never makes it back to its shelf between washings.

That’s because nothing chases the January blues away like a hearty stew simmering on the stove. Or a pork and mushroom ragu. Or a creamy risotto.  This week you should find everything you need at the farmers market to flesh out your risotto, from squash to mushrooms to carrots. Also check out Cowberry Crossing and Roaming Angus for suggestions on good pieces of meat to throw into a stew. Fresh fish is also great in stews.  Pura Vida should have plenty of monkfish on hand this week. But get there early for clams: they sold out at the last market!

Fork and Glass was such a hit at the last market, they will return with more delectable samples to pass out (wasn’t that duck morsel divine?). This week, the Cold Spring Catering Company will also have some of their prepared soups and foods to sell—for those of you who may not have a blue pot.

If you fall into the former category, please make sure to try some of Lasagna Preziosa lasagna.  A slice of their pesto lasagna, with a batch of fresh chicory or arugula from Aqua or Madura Farms and you’re good to go.

Concklins Orchards is here this week with their cider donuts (sugar and plain) and snappy orchard apples.

Snow is in the forecast for Saturday morning. We’ll have complimentary, fresh brewed Peet’s coffee from Pika’s Nuts for you when you get there and then you can warm your stomach with a hearty breakfast burrito (organic egg and potato, or chorizo and kale) from True Food.
