On Monday, June 13, the Town will begin construction on the South Greeley parking lot, between the Bell school field and the backs of the string of shops on South Greeley Avenue, from Woodburn Avenue to King Street.
According to the town’s website, “The construction will last through the summer and should be completed by Labor Day. This project will make much needed repairs to the infrastructure in the area—those things that you might not notice when the project is completed—improvements to drainage and the sanitary sewer line. However, there will be a number of improvements that will be very obvious when the project is completed:
* redesign of the parking lot to increase not just the number of spots but also to improve the accessibility of those spots to shoppers
* redesign will improve traffic flow so you will be able to exit the parking lot as easily as you enter it
* installation of lighting in a center median much like the type found around the train station to illuminate the new parking lot at night
* repave and restripe the new parking lot
Although the entire parking lot will be redesigned, the parking lot will remain open during construction with 70 spots available to shoppers throughout the project. However, access to some areas of the parking lot will of course be limited and shoppers can expect new parking configurations during the project.
Signs about the project will go up the first week in June in anticipation of the start of the project. Of course residents can go to our website: www.mynewcastle.org to be kept up to date on changes in parking during the construction.”
Are lights really necessary? Who parks there at night?
Many people park there at night, particularly in the winter when darkness falls before 5pm. But all year long lots of hard working people park there at night (me being one of them), as do the countless people who frequent some of the town restaurants. After having my office in town for 15 years, I, for one, will truly welcome not having to stumble out to my car at the end of a long day.
I hope this goes ahead as efficiently as the installation of the sidewalk along 120 several years ago and not as inefficiently as the bridge overhaul.
