Valentines Day is Monday!! Come by the market Saturday and pick up something for the sweethearts in your house. If you need the traditional chocolate-y something, see Marjan at Dutch Desserts. She is bringing her decadent chocolate tarts in the shape of a heart. A tip, get there early - these always sell out before Valentines Day.
Big Girl Bakery will also have the perfect sweets for your sweetheart - who can resist those delicate French sable cookies in their pretty, gift-ready packaging. Or how about pie for your loved ones? Food pundits say that 2011 is the year of the PIE. Who are we to disagree?
This week we are have new baker, the Pie Lady of Nyak (& son)! I met Deborah Tyler 10 years ago, long before I was running farmers markets, when I was researching my book, “American Pie: Slices of Life (and Pie) from America’s Back Roads” (Harper Collins). Deborah didn’t have a storefront back then, but baked pies from scratch to order for friends and a small coterie of dedicated pie lovers, who, like me, had tracked Tyler and her blue-ribbon crust, down. She was a struggling single mom and her son Will was not much taller than a rolling pin. I’ve often wondered whatever happened to Tyler and her fledgling pie business. So when I heard recently that she and her son had gone into business together and were looking for venues to sell her creations, it felt like kismet. Make sure you stop and welcome Will, who now works with his mom, to the market tomorrow and check out their variations on apple pie and blueberry pies as well.
Think your Valentine would prefer something heartier? Cowberry Crossing has a great supply of pork this week. A steak dinner might be just the thing for your sweetheart. Stop by Roaming Angus and check out their gorgeous cuts of beef - maybe a delicious pepper-crusted filet mignon for Valentine’s Day. And, fish can be romantic, too. Really. Check out our classically French skate wing recipe in this newsletter.
Simply Valley cheese will be there this Saturday with their eclectic assortment of artisanal cheeses, smoked trout, lamb spring rolls and those divine pretzels.
Remember: the knife sharpener won’t be back until March 5th. (So many of you have told me that you haven’t had your knives sharpened since you received them as a wedding gift 20 plus years ago. Surely you can wait another couple of weeks?
