Mark Twain and the Minister

Oct. 30 Sun. 4:00

It might come as a surprise that Mark Twain’s closet friend was a New England Congregationalist minister, the Rev. Twichell.  They swapped yarns and argued over many things…and, of course, religion.  Their interaction over the decades tells us a lot about the evolution of Twain’s faith and his loss of it (if he really ever did lose it) over his long and explosive life.

Steve Courtney, lecturer, is on the staff of the Mark Twain House is author of an award-winning biography of Rev. Twichell.

A multi-media tribute to Mark Twain on the 100th anniversary of his death.  The Chappaqua Orchestra will perform Virgil Thomson’s epic score simultaneously with the Depression era film The River.  The River film is still very relevant today as Twain’s inspiration the Mississippi River continues to flood and cause turmoil throughout the center of our country.  The orchestra will also perform Charles Ives’ gorgeous tone poem The Housatonic at Stockbridge and beloved vocal excerpts from Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s Show Boat. Twain and Ives met through Ives’ father-in-law the Reverend Joseph Twichell of Hartford, Connecticut.  Twain’s witticisms about the young Ives will be recounted by William Gerrard, who will also provide the narration for The River.  Audience favorite Deborah Horne, soprano, and a bass baritone also will join Maestro Michael Shapiro and the orchestra in this celebration of American music and American river ways.
