Op-Ed: Barack Obama makes history, help make him president

A lot has happened since those cold days in January when I stood in the Chappaqua train station with a few other hardy souls, encouraging voters to support Barack Obama in the New York Democratic primary.
Our country made history when Barack Obama became the presumptive Democratic nominee for President this month. Back in January it would have been nice to win, but I didn’t expect to win. But now, as Democrats, we have to win.
There are lots of new ways to get involved. Right now, the emphasis is on growing the movement and growing the vote. There will be “Hungry for Change” bake sales on June 21 (we’re hoping to have one here in Chappaqua) and “Unite for Change” parties on June 28. You can look for parties nearby on the website Barackobama.com. And to grow the vote (what better way to celebrate Obama’s nomination and being an American?) there are ongoing voter registration drives.
Help register voters in Ossining this weekend
With the November election a mere five months away, VoteZip.org has organized a massive voter registration drive in Ossining on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Volunteers will go door-to-door to reach eligible unregistered individuals as well as solicit voters on the streets. They will also encourage voter registration in front of grocery stores and in a booth at the Ossining Village Fair.
Fifty local volunteers have already signed up at http://www.Barackobama.com to conduct the door-to-door and street efforts. Volunteers from many other groups are involved, including folks who signed up through Craig’s List. Volunteers involved in the Ossining Democratic Committee are heading up the Ossining Village Fair booth.
If you would like to help, meet up with other volunteers at the Star of Bethlehem Church in Ossining, 304 Spring Street, on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. More information is available at http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4hf.
This voter registration drive is helping to create a new paradigm in organization and energy to help bring all Americans to the polls in November.
