Op Ed: “Warlike Activity”

March 28, 2008

My 16-year-old son continued to use his cell phone, band aided with silver duct tape to match, until the hinge between the hearing and talking parts completely gave out.

Even then, the push buttons and lights of the talk half were still working, and it had enough life in it to allow a transfer of its stored info to the new phone.

Waiting around for the computer “paperwork” to be finished, we all regarded its two parts on the desk between us. Near what felt like the wrap up, the cell phone store guy asked whether we wanted insurance on the phone for $4.99 a month. I asked how generous a replacement policy that $4.99 a month entitled us to. He rattled off, “Everything. Everything except if the government seizes the phone, nuclear radiation or warlike activity.” The first two were pretty clear, but I pressed to learn more about “warlike activity.”

“What if it breaks in rough-and-tumble?” I asked. “Not if it’s against another country,” he supplied briskly.
