There are so many great qualities that define Mark Chipkin, the sixth grade science teacher on Team D. He is one of the most outstanding teachers with which we have had the pleasure of working. His creativity, intelligence, compassionate nature and sincere, charismatic personality are what make him so special.
Mark as a teacher
Mark is an advocate of student-centered learning, which allows the students to explore their educational and emotional identity. Mark is able to hold onto the students’ attention because of his creative way of delivering instruction. He is constantly making changes and revising lessons to enhance the students’ learning.
Mark created a lasting impact on his students through imaginative assignments. For example, his students built Egyptian reed boats and sailed them down his Nile River - the stream behind the Chappaqua library; he also led them in sing-alongs, including “Old Man Look at My Life” by Neil Young. He took them on exciting field trips to the Wolf Conservation Center or to study the starry night at the Horace Greeley High School observatory, where they learned about astronomy through the use of telescopes. Mark is all about the students.
Any student who has had Mark is truly fortunate. His students are always enthusiastic and eager to go above and beyond the required expectations because they have such motivation and love for science. Mark plays a big role in influencing his students’ love for science. It is important for teachers to make connections with their students and he seems to do that with ease. Students still keep in contact with Mark even after they graduate and go on to their own professional lives. They have amazing memories of him that they cherish. As one student commented, “I feel lucky to have had a teacher that was so kind and fun and accepted me for the way I was. You made my sixth grade year awesome by allowing me to express my true talents and dreams.”
Mark as a colleague
Mark is an exceptional person who demonstrates true loyalty and commitment to his colleagues. Whether it is advice on a personal or professional level, he is always there to listen and offer suggestions. Mark is a strong link in the Bell community and we will miss his presence. We wish Mark all the best in his new adventures in retirement. Enjoy your beautiful gardens at your home in Pawling and the many wonderful trips you plan to take. Good luck with your new company, TickleMePlant.com.
