Open Letter from the Millwood Fire Commissioners
February 26, 2010
Dear Neighbor,
We are writing to the community with several important updates regarding developments related to the new firehouse. These developments include public meetings to share our siting alternatives, presentation of a preliminary budget and a permissive referendum to purchase an additional property on Millwood Road.
On Monday, February 22, 2010, the Board of Fire Commissioners approved a motion to purchase the Cortez property located at 108 Millwood Road. This was done to ensure that the Fire District will have free and clear title to access the proposed fire station. This motion included approval of a permissive referendum to withdraw an amount not to exceed $585,000 from the Capital Reserve Fund . Once the firehouse is completed, we will have the option of selling the remaining parcel to recoup our cost, making this a low- or cost-neutral investment in our community’s future safety.
There are two public meetings scheduled to share plans for the new firehouse. The public meetings are at 7:30 p.m. on March 15, 2010, at Firestation #1, located at 60 Millwood Road; and at 7:30 p.m. on March 22, 2010, at Firestation #2, located at 366 Croton Dam Road. At these meetings we will be presenting three alternative plans, along with a preliminary budget and cost projections for each of the alternatives.
The plans call for a building of approximately 18,000 sq. ft. which includes 5 bays, one meeting room, a ready room, a member lounge and kitchen, and district offices. This plan was developed based on the 2008 JLN Needs Assessment Study with input from firematic consultant, SCN. You may download the study from the district web site at www.millwoodfiredistrict.org.
We encourage district residents to join us for these meetings. ODA, our architect, and AKRF, our engineering consultants, will be present at these meetings along with the Commissioners. We welcome your questions and input at these meetings.
