That’s the slogan of the campaign to combat driving under the influence initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and joined by New York State. Town of New Castle police are definitely on board.
The purpose of this 18-day campaign that began on August 15 and will end on Labor Day, September 1, is to deter incidents of driving while under the influence with high visibility enforcement. New York State will provide funds to local police and sheriff departments to increase sobriety checkpoints and roaming patrols, both of which are employed by the New Castle Police Department. So far during the course of this campaign, two arrests have been made in New Castle.
According to Sgt. Keith Dworkin of the New Castle police, “The department will be conducting a saturation patrol on [August] 29th.” He believes that a high level of visibility will deter drivers, making them think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car [while under the influence.]
The blood alcohol content limit in New York State is 0.08.
According to the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee web site, “Across the country, every 30 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related crash. Last year alone, more than one million people nationwide were injured in automobile crashes in which alcohol was a factor. In fact, in 2006 there were nearly 8,000 alcohol-related crashes in which almost 400 lives were lost in New York.”
