Anouilh’s Antigone is an adaptation of Sophocles’ tragic play of the same title. Written in 1942, when Nazi forces occupied France, the story revolves around the conflict between the idealist Antigone and her rigid uncle, Creon, over the proper burial of Antigone’s brother, Polynices.
The play was also interpreted to represent the struggle of the French Resistance movement against the forces of the Vichy government during the height of Nazi occupation. This incisive translation of the classic drama is by the noted British playwright, translator and director, Jeremy Sams.
“With the feel and look of classic French film-noir,” said Director Christopher Schraufnagel, “Anouilh’s masterpiece creates gripping tension, the type of tension that can only foreshadow an impending bloodbath.”
A talented cast makes it a must-see evening at the theater. Cast members include Maile Hamilton, Matt Haas, Sam Caywood, Tim McHale, Christine Haggerty, Miriam Gleckman, Patrick Moore, Zach Ehrlich, Sky Jarrett, Justin Wolf, Julia Deutsch and Zak Krooks.
