U11 Girls) Chappaqua Wildfire 1 - Scarsdale Strikers 5
Chappaqua Wildfire 0 – Scarsdale Stingrays 1
The Wildfire played two games this week. The first one was on Sunday versus the Scarsdale Strikers. Kimberly Rota scored early in the game, helping the Wildfire to take the lead against the only undefeated team in their division. Despite strong defensive plays by Bernadette Grant and Leah Nankof, Scarsdale scored five unanswered goals to win the game 5 - 1.
The Wildfire’s next opponent was the Scarsdale Stingrays. Chappaqua spent most of the first half in Scarsdale’s end of the field. Lexie McGowan, Jamie Roteman and Isabel Lafortezza shot numerous times on goal, but the Scarsdale goalie managed to save every one of their shots. After the half Scarsdale came out strong and put the Wildfire to the test. The final score was Scarsdale 1, Chappaqua 0. The Wildfire will play their last game of the season on Sunday versus the Harrison Rockets.
(Girls 12) Chappaqua Tigers 2 - Gotham Girls 1
The Tigers had their usual slow start and found themselves under pressure most of the first 15 minutes against the Division 1 leading Gotham Girls. This pressure was a testament to the talent and work ethic of the Gotham Girls who were playing with only ten players. The Tigers held on for a first half draw at 0 - 0.
As the Tigers began to sort out their own defensive coverage and find the open spaces against their undermanned opponents, the tide changed. The Tigers started to take over play by finding open forwards with space to run. Soon after the start of the second half the Tigers broke through and went up 1 - 0. The teams traded goals late in the game and finished up 2 - 1 for the Tigers. While the Tigers played up one player the whole game, they were also missing several key girls and had only one substitution. In the end they found the weaknesses in their opponent and capitalized when the opportunities came. The Tigers are now 6-2-1 with one game to go. They still have an outside chance at the division title but would need to win their last game and get some help from other teams.
(High School Boys) Scarsdale United 5 - Chappaqua Gunners 1
Chris Ethridge scored the lone goal for the Gunners on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. The Gunners close their spring season next Sunday at Edgemont at 1:00 p.m.
(Girls 13) Chappaqua Jaguars 5 - Mamaroneck Hotshots 0
The G13 Jaguars became division 2 champs today on the strength of their season-ending 5 - 0 rout of Mamaroneck, though the lopsided score still did not reflect the degree of domination on the field. Jaguar goals were scored by Olivia Kerester, Nicole Levy, Danielle Berg, Jessica Ahlmen and Julie Shanus. Lindsay Hill and Joanna Tulman teamed up to earn the shutout in the goal. All the Jaguars played extremely well, and the team collectively played its best game of the season. Hill in particular was awesome, supplementing her first-half goalie play with great play in the field in the second half. Mention too should be made of Emma Lampe, who played another strong game, this one despite being weak from illness. We’re sorry to see the season close but happy to be able to end on such a high note. The team ended the season 7-2-0 with a goals for/against ratio of 21-5.
(U11 Girls) Chappaqua Mustangs 1 - Rye Brook Panthers 2
The Mustangs were in full force for their last game of the season at Rye Brook. Their opponents played defense for much of the game, and the ball remained on their side of the field most of the time. The Panthers scored on a penalty kick early in the game. Emma Fetner tied it up with a long outside shot by halftime. The Mustangs had over ten shots on goal during one ten minute period without the benefit of hitting the net. It was a breakaway by the Panthers that resulted in a goal to win the game. All in all, the girls solidified their move to Division 2 this season by demonstrating growth in all areas of the game.
(U13 Girls) Chappaqua Liberty 1 - Gotham Girls Stars 1
The turf field in lower Manhattan was the setting for the rematch with Gotham Girls, the division leader. The Liberty certainly made the trip to the city worthwhile. In their finest game thus far, the Liberty women played with guts and determination, focused on giving Gotham all they could handle. The Liberty struck first on a beautiful breakaway score by Caroline Whalen. Defense again was strong, with great play by Sara Mcelheny and Brett Finkelstein. Both goalkeepers, Megan Schippmann and Cara Goldfarb, made outstanding saves that defied reason. Gotham tied the match on a frenzied play, one of many, right in front of the Liberty goal. With only minutes remaining, Taylor Hochstin made an inspired run on the Gotham goal, only to be stopped by an all-star play by the Gotham goalie. Strong efforts by Ally Kuhn, Alexandra Medway, Jackie Seltzer and Audrey Seligman all helped in the Liberty tie. Only one game remains (with the possibility of a make-up game as well) for the Liberty this spring. One of the most exciting games the Liberty has ever played!
(U13 Boys) Chappaqua Scorpions 5 - FC Transylvania 2
The Chappaqua Scorpions, playing in Division 1 of the U13 Boys, recorded a win against FC Transylvania on Sunday at Gedney Field, to move their record to 4 - 4. After going down 1 - 0 early in the first half, Ben Factor scored to tie the game and then added a second goal to take the lead. Both goals were based on skill and hustle. The Scorpions were playing inspired soccer, controlling the midfield and using their outstanding defense to shut down any offensive attack. FC Transylvania plays with poise and bases their attack around several strong players, but today was outplayed by great efforts in the back from Harrison Brown, Josh Kogan, Andrew Sheinfeld and Robby Gautney. Toward the end of the first half, the Scorpions added another goal with great passing and a good finish by their right midfielder, Josh Perlmutter, to make the score 3 - 1. The scoring of the first half not done yet; a beautiful cross to the middle and through let Neil Port take a quick look and beat the goalie to the left with a well placed shot. At the end of the first half the score was 4 - 1 Scorpions.
Fearing a comeback from a very strong team, the Scorpions continued their dominant play, winning most balls and spreading the field well. FC Transylvania managed a counter attack, and scored for 4 - 2. Within three minutes of this goal, the Scorpions midfield worked the ball up and pushed a beautiful ball to the right wing, played by Blake Davis. In the right corner, Blake chipped a perfect ball to the head of Dillon Breuning, who finished the play with an outstanding header to the left corner. Great assist. Great goal! The score was now 5 - 2 Scorpions.
With the heat of the day still beating down on the boys and each side showing the effect of the sun, the Scorpions continued their dominant play to earn several other opportunities. Bryan Hammershlag made his typical excellent appearance as goalie, stopping many shots and cutting down several through balls and playing an overall excellent game.
Outstanding play by the entire Scorpion team made for an enjoyable game to watch. The final score was 5 - 2.
(Boys U10) Harrison Cyclones 4 - Chappaqua Wildcats 1
What better way to spend Father’s Day than watching your sons play their hearts out in the last game of the season? A large Chappaqua contingent ventured down to Purchase to watch their boys play the Harrison Cyclones. The Wildcats got off to a good start and controlled play for most of the first ten minutes. Harrison kept three defenders back and fought off all Chappaqua attempts to score. Then the Cyclones began to play well and scored the first and only goal of the half.
In the second half, the Cyclones scored on a terrific play, then Harrison Tulman of the Wildcats lofted a beautiful shot over the goalie and into the net. Chappaqua was back in the game and pushed hard for the tying goal only to be held back by the Cyclones, who scored two goals at the end to seal the victory for Harrison.
Congratulations to the Wildcats who won their division in the fall with a 7-1-1 record, then moved up a level in division play and took on the challenge to raise their game. The spring record wasn’t what we hoped it to be, but Matthew Kaufman, Noah Kessler, Jeffrey Merchant, Brad Neufeld, Tyler Sherman, Mark Schenkel, Matthew Silberstein, Harrison Tulman, Alex Vanderwerff and Yan Yan Xie should be proud of themselves for taking on the higher competition and for elevating their level of play. Thanks to our trainers and coaches, Ricardo Lyon, Gordon Kessler, Michael Merchant, Bing Bing Xie and Jeff Sherman for making the season both successful and fun for the boys and for the parents. Enjoy the summer everyone!
