Thank you for bringing to our attention the discussions at the October 2, 2009, New Castle Town Board and Planning Board Meetings covering the potential impact of the Chappaqua Crossing project on the cost of our schools.
I also read with interest in the October 9, 2009, issue of NewCastleNOW, comments by School Board President Jeffrey Mester and School Board Member Gregg Bresner on the same subject.
As a taxpayer, my interest is to understand what our school taxes would be without the additional students from Chappaqua Crossing, and what would the additional cost be by having to accommodate the students from the project?
Depending on what assumptions are made, I have read that the Chappaqua Crossing residential development could add as many as 250 new students to the schools. Our cost per student is about $25,200. Multiply 250 x $25,200 and it equals $6,300,000. This is partially offset by the incremental tax revenue generated by Chappaqua Crossing which is projected to be $1,290,000 annually. This would leave an incremental tax burden for the Chappaqua taxpayer of about $5,010,000.
That is a big number and I would certainly welcome a discussion on this vital point if some of the above assumptions are incorrect.
