Editorial: New Year’s Resolutions

January 1, 2010
by Susie Pender

Groan! I can hear it through the Internet. A big collective groan. Two things no one wants to hear about on New Year’s Day after a night of revelry: someone’s resolutions and, worse yet, admonitions to make resolutions.

Well, I promise you, this is not the former. Although Christine and I would love to share with you all the plans and activities we have developed for NewCastleNOW.org readers and advertisers in 2010, we choose to unveil them week-by-week, edition-by-edition.

No, this essay, I fear, is in the dreaded latter category, an admonition to make a resolution. But I will be brief.

Get involved. That’s it. Resolve to get involved in New Castle. Start by reading NewCastleNOW.org every Friday, and the Monday updates as well. Encourage your friends, neighbors and children who have flown the coop to sign up for a free subscription.

Two reasons: There are major town and school issues to be decided that will affect how you live, how your children are educated, and whether you and your family choose to continue to live in New Castle.

Second reason: The town officials and the school board need your opinion on these issues. We all have expertise or experience in something. Contribute that experience or expertise to the town or the school district at regular meetings, by email, or through a letter to the editor of NewCastleNOW.org. The number of responses we have received to those letters that begin, “I had no idea someone else felt the way I did . . .” is revelatory.

As many of you have seen on our pages, we have had architects, financial analysts, lawyers, chefs, the list goes on and on, share their expertise with our readers on a variety of topics. What can you contribute to the place you live? A recipe, an idea about how to get children to read more, an explanation about the financial ramifications of some decisions contemplated by the school or town board? The proverbial two heads are better than one, and 200 ideas are better than one, and 2000 ideas, well, just imagine the possibilities. Think about it. (There’s the admonition. And now I’m done.)
