On Friday, May 9th, the 8th grade students of Bell and Seven Bridges, the Class of 2012, took part in Chappaqua PTA’s 11th annual middle school Career Day.
The event, held at Seven Bridges, has been a gem in the eighth grade learning experience.
The program began with a keynote address by Jonathan Klein, president of CNN/US, who spoke about the different kinds of jobs that go into making CNN a team success: carpenters, electricians, set design, caterers and accountants. He told the young audience how dramatically the job market has changed, that while he was growing up it was common for people to have one job for a lifetime, whereas “now you can expect to have five to seven jobs during your career,” adding that “in ten years my current job will probably be obsolete.”
The students then traveled in groups of 20 to listen to 15-minute presentations from local professionals in each of six different career categories: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Business and Information Systems, Health Services, Human and Public Services, and Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
Elaine Krim, one of the parent organizers of the program, said, “The kids really seemed to enjoy listening to the diverse group of presenters. We want them to get a sense of what is out there, and that there are many ways of getting to live their dream
