Last weekend, Millwood Fire Company and Chappaqua Fire Company conducted their yearly inspections.
Back in the 1800’s when fire companies and equipment were few and far between, companies relied on each other for mutual aid, sharing equipment and manpower. Often fires took more than one company to handle. To receive mutual aid, fire companies had to be able to provide mutual aid, and it became the custom to check out, through official visits, what the other companies had.
“We still depend on each other for mutual aid,” says Joe Rod, of Millwood FC, “but in the modern world inspection day is a way to focus on sharpening axes, painting, polishing, cleaning and organizing equipment and trucks. Back in March we started with our fire hose testing, and the overall preparation takes four nights a week for five weeks, ten to twenty firefighters showing up per night, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.”
