Of course shopping may not be at the top of your list this month as you wrestle instead with all those resolutions you made. And yet, local shopping could make those resolutions easier to keep.

That one about exercising more: How about walking downtown to check out the sales as a well-earned break from sitting and staring at your computer? That one about saving more money: You can save, but you still need to live. Your wife’s birthday will still come in March. So why not get down to ICD Contemporary Jewelers on S. Greeley Avenue and pick up something on sale now? The whole store is 10-50% off.

And children will still have birthdays and birthday parties to attend. So why not stock up at Penny Auntie? All Melissa and Doug dogs in the window are 50% off, dollhouses are 30% off, select Playmobil sets are 20% off, and just imagine, a grand piano, at 30% off! Penny Auntie will be adding Lego sets to its store stock this year, saving a trip further afield.

Karen Lustig, the owner of Penny Auntie, echoing the sentiments of many merchants in town, appreciates all the residents of New Castle who shopped locally this holiday season. “I felt a real effort by regular customers and new customers to shop locally. I appreciated very much their genuine concern and effort. They always asked me, ‘how is it going?’

Warm, winter woolens on sale

It’s cold outside, but everyone got you flip-flops for the holiday in anticipation of summer (and because they are cute and cheap!) Squire’s has North Face fleeces, down jackets and vests at 50% off, as well as men’s sweaters at 50% off. The Annual Winter Sale is in full swing at Family Britches, with as much as 50% off on men’s, women’s and boys’ fall and winter merchandise. Especially appreciated in these budget-conscious times is their complimentary alterations policy, even on sale items!

Indigo on King Street has its clothing on sale at 25 -75% off. There are still lots of sweaters available for cuddling in as you watch the snow fly outside. At Rhodadendron, further up the hill on King Street, the whole store is 25% off, with some select clothing 50% off.

Feathering your nest for less

Go to Your Room on South Greeley Avenue is having an Overstock Clearance Sale of 50% off through the end of the month. The holiday season is over, but it always comes back sooner than expected. So save on holiday decorations now at Greeley Home and Hardware, where the Blowout Sale is 25-50%, at Marmalade, whose treasures are 30% off and at the Crown House at the top of the hill, where all Christmas items are at least 50% off, “with lots of good stuff still left,” enthused Merrily Holmes.
Sale to benefit PTA organizations

On January 30, Marmalade will host a very special pre-valentine trunk show of Heather B. Moore jewelry with champagne, Tea Forte and sweet treats. Five percent of all sales will be donated to the Chappaqua PTA, the Pleasantville PTA and the Pleasantville Special Education PTA. Valentine delivery on your purchases is guaranteed!
