Letter to the Editor: Concerns about cutting garbage pick-up to once a week

Dear Editor,

I read your article regarding cutting garbage pick-up to once a week (Budget Buzz: Possible $avings from reducing garbage pick-up days to one, NewCastleNOW.org, July 17, 2009), and I have the following concerns:

1- Concerns about health hazards from garbage building up inside the

houses and on the streets from animals and insects attracted to the garbage.

2 - Concerns regarding the safety of the children while waiting for the

school buses with animals roaming around the garbage on the streets.

3 - Concerns that the town will no longer be nice and clean.

4 - Concerns that some employees of the garbage company will loose their

jobs as a result of the schedule change at a time when we should be supporting job creation.

5 - The savings the town will obtain is negligible and might become a

huge loss considering the money the town might be paying to resolve health problems or disputes.

6 - Concerns that if this schedule fails and the town wants to go back

to twice a week pick-up, the company might say: “Since we’re doubling the service, we need to double the charge to $6 million!
