Letter to the Editor: Downtown development ideas

Dear Editor,

I agree that another bank in downtown Chappaqua is not a good idea, unless the town is simply desperate to fill a space. Has there been any thought to possibly soliciting certain types of business occupants that would be more desirable? That may be a tough sell in this economy, but being more pro-active about trying to attract desirable businesses, especially under current conditions, would be sensible.

A former occupant of the Nash properties was a stationery store, which I used and thought was a worthwhile business to have downtown. The owners of that business seemed very solid and were a pleasure to deal with. After they left, their customers were left mainly with Staples up in Bedford Hills as the only option, and having to drive all the way up there is inconvenient for many of us.

That’s one idea that might be worth pursuing, and I’m sure there are many others if we just invested some effort in an effort to find businesses that would be suitable. Another idea, in case no one has thought of it yet, would be to sponsor a poll on possible new business tenants on your website that interested residents could respond to.

Thanks,

James M. Nash
