Letter to the Editor: Rec sports in Chappaqua—it does take a village

Dear Editor,

Whether it’s spring, fall, or winter, the fields and gyms in Chappaqua are filled with kids playing rec sports. The kids are active, they’re building skills, they’re learning teamwork and they’re having fun. These organized sports are a special part of our village. What makes this work?

It’s the coaches, the assistant coaches and the league organizers. They don’t just show up for practices and games – they plan, they build and run web-sites and e-mail lists. They order uniforms, they collect and share used uniforms, they run clinics, they hire trainers, they schedule games, they make the call about rain outs, and, most importantly, they nurture and teach our kids. It’s a huge amount of work – all done by volunteers brought together by a love of sports and by a love of kids.

Over the past 14 years, the three kids in our family have participated in rec sports programs for T-ball, baseball, soccer, football, basketball and lacrosse. By my math, we’ve had 28 sets of coaches, assistant coaches and league organizers. That’s 28 sets of people who’ve taken time out of their lives to help our kids grow and develop.

I wanted to take a minute and say a strong THANK YOU to each of the coaches, assistant coaches and league organizers who’ve given so much to our family and to our community.

Sincerely,

Warren E. Hart
