Letter to the Editor: Trash pickup is a health issue

Dear Editor,

We are strongly in favor of the town maintaining the twice-weekly garbage pickup service. We recycle very assiduously and still have enough trash to warrant this level of service. The $36 per year savings per household is so de minimus that it does not seem worthy of the time taken for consideration, especially when the balance of interests is so skewed. 

Trash pickup is a public health issue and should be taken seriously. Excess trash attracts rodents and other pests that carry diseases. The cost of one extermination treatment can average $200 and exposes us, our children and our environment to hazardous toxins. 

NewCastleNow.org is providing a useful service in attempting to gauge public opinion on this issue. However, the survey results showing a 50/50 split in opinion are not necessarily reflective of the total population. Many families with children have only recently found out about this proposal to cut services and did not participate in the survey.

We hope the Town Board will reject this idea and maintain our town’s current standard of service.
