Summer Slowdown
Realignment of Allen and Schuman intersection
Bike path along Pinesbridge
A sleepy summer lull appears to have settled over Millwood and its environs as many residents are off on vacation, while others seek to enjoy the local sunshine (between the raindrops and wind storms, that is).
Some additional discussion at last week’s Millwood Task Force meeting not previously reported included a reminder that the New Castle Planning Board is continuing to develop an “area site plan” for a section on both sides of Millwood Road in the heart of the hamlet. This study is scheduled to include a review of the frequently mentioned proposal to realign Allen Avenue and Schumann Road into a regular four-way intersection, simplifying an otherwise complicated stretch of downtown Millwood that now has multiple turning opportunities within a very short segment of roadway. It is possible that such an adjustment would offer some cost savings and other benefits in connection with the design and construction of the proposed new firehouse, and it might very well affect development of property along Allen Avenue. The town and the MTF will discuss the issue further in the coming months.
Last week’s Task Force discussion regarding possible construction of a bicycle lane along a stretch of Pines Bridge Road (from Grace Lane to Warburg Park) provoked some lively post-meeting response. Some residents, noting the relatively narrow width of the roadway, expressed deep concern about the suggestion from a safety standpoint. Proponents suggest that with the county committed to a substantial financial investment in the reconstruction project, this provides an ideal opportunity to have this additional feature accomplished at a minimum cost. At this point, the proposal is very preliminary and subject to further discussion and review before any final decisions are made. Send your comments and suggestions to
