Mom’s Special Day, but what to get?

There are many signs that Mother’s Day is fast approaching, spring flowers, Hallmark posters heralding the May 11 event and jewelry commercials jumping out of flat-screen TVs and flooding the radio airwaves.

With so many choices out there, how to decide?  We asked a couple of our local jewelers for some guidance.

Recommendations from Desires of Mikolay

Sarah Maren Mass, head buyer for Desires of Mikolay, explained they carry many options from traditional to the latest popular styles. But the buzz right now is stackers, stackers and more stackers!!!

According to Mass, white gold and blue sapphire stacking rings are classic and traditional. “But we have been selling a lot of yellow gold with diamonds. They are usually sold in sets of three, although if they are going to be stacked around a wedding band then we sell two pieces. Usually the center ring is the widest and the focal point. A great way to add a splash of yellow gold to a woman’s wardrobe is to make the center yellow gold and diamonds and the outer two white gold and diamonds. The price averages $400 and up, depending on how many diamonds and size of the ring.”  She also suggested white gold and colored stone stackers representing the birthstone of each child.

Continuing with the theme of children and birthstones,  Mass pointed out a line that they carry of initial pendants by Marie Chavez. The child’s initial is engraved on a disc to which the child’s birthstone is added. The disc and chain are all sterling silver and start at $125. Initial pendants in other materials can be special ordered as well.

Mass also suggested Satya earrings, or “sexy goddess hoops.” They come in sterling silver vermeil with different colored stone briolettes, including ruby, peridot, carnelian and multi-tourmaline. These earrings average around $180 - 250.  Diamond hoop earrings are also popular, noted Mass, specifically the inside/out hoops in which there are diamonds on the front of the back side and the front of the front side, generating maximum sparkle.  These earrings average $1,990.

Recommendations from Steve Matero of Matero’s newy opened in Millwood

Of course we fabricate all the obvious choices for Mother’s Day.  The traditional birthstone rings and pendants.  These are set with birthstones depicting the birth month of each child.
We are also doing this years newest feature which owes its popularity to the new “SEX IN THE CITY” movie.  It is a gold pendant made of a heart shaped disc.  The piece is engraved with the child’s initial and set with the child’s birthstone.
But our favorite piece is for those looking for something a little more personal.  We are making both fingerprint pendants and charms.  The piece is a replica of your child’s fingerprint!  When completed we engrave the back with both your child’s name and the date the print was taken. To date the Mom’s love it!  No two are the same!
