The Greeley boys’ varsity basketball team started their season on Tuesday night before a very supportive home crowd with a 65-59 come-from-behind victory over a spirited Ossining High School team.
Perhaps jittery due to opening night, Greeley started sluggishly and, after less than three minutes, found itself down 11-0. After a timeout, Greeley settled itself, and behind Harrison Brown’s inside presence and four points, mounted a comeback and finished the quarter on an 8-6 run to find itself down only 17-8. The Quakers continued this momentum into the second quarter when they outscored Ossining 22-14 and cut the deficit to 31-30 at the half. The run was led by Connor Domershick’s three treys and aggressive inside play from Cole Benack and Teddy Graves, contributing four points apiece in the quarter.
Third and fourth quarters couldn’t be more different
Greeley opened the second half slowly, scoring only nine points in the third quarter and fell behind by nine points by the period’s end. On the other side, Ossining was hitting timely jump shots from beyond the arc and its aggressive rebounding and inside play led to several uncontested or second chance layups.
But the fourth quarter was an entirely different game. The Quakers came out looking to step up the tempo, control the ball and hit the open man. Greeley started using a full court press that accelerated play for Ossining and often led to Greeley fastbreak layups, overloaded situations and either open jump shots – with Domershick hitting two clutch threes – or favorable interior matchups with Brown asserting himself. Brown scored eleven in the quarter and went seven for eight from the charity stripe. Josh Rosen quarterbacked the offense, banking nine assists in the game, with four in the fourth, and scored six points down the stretch to hold off Ossining.
The Quakers play at HOME TONIGHT, Friday, December 16, at 7:00 p.m. against Yorktown and Saturday, December 17 in the Greeley Boosters Tourney. Check the Greeley website for the TBA time of Saturday’s game. Come out and support the team!
