Peeping at Pinecliff peepers!  Or “pinkletinks” (on the Vineyard), “tinkletoes” (in Canada)

UPDATE: April 5, 2010

Last Saturday, Anne Swaim of the Saw Mill River Audubon Society led the Society’s annual evening expedition to hear and find peepers at Pinecliff Sanctuary, off Quaker Road.  She used her iPhone to call to peepers—and they answered back!

The call of the tiny nocturnal spring peeper is a sure sign that winter is finished with us.  Now in breeding season, males are judged by the quality of their peeps.  Part of a genus named “Chorus Frogs,” peepers emit one-peep-per-second, and often hundreds or thousands of them peep together, sounding, some say, like jingle-bells—and they continue all night long.

A section of the boardwalk at Pinecliff was damaged by the fall of an enormous tree and is under repair. See slide show below and in Photo Gallery.
