The Greeley boys’ basketball team easily handled the John Jay Indians on Wednesday night, winning by 37 points. The game, in which the Quakers never trailed, offered a welcome salve after last week’s narrow loss in Yorktown. Adam Honig led the team with 25 points on 10 for 18 shooting, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.
In the first quarter, the Quakers jumped out to a 23-7 lead. Matt Townsend and Billy Sadik-Khan each chipped in 9 points during the quarter on identical shooting lines (4 of 5 from the field and 1 of 2 from the line). In the second quarter, Honig and Freshman Harrison Brown combined for 16 points, including 12 of the team’s first 14 points in the quarter. Greeley’s improved ball-handling was marked by only three turnovers in the first half. The Quakers also dominated the boards in the half with 27 total rebounds including 11 offensive boards.
In a remarkable sequence to open the second half, Greeley stole the ball on six of the Indians’ first seven possessions – all six of the steals occurred within the first 1:41 of the half. Honig pocketed four of the six steals and Robert Cross added one (of his 4 for the game) and Justin Ciero contributed the other. The Quakers stretched their lead to as many as 46 points as the third quarter drew to a close. Greeley maintained the big lead in the fourth with contributions from Matt Xie, Stevie Haynes, Teddy Graves, Mitch Rubin, and Tyler Goldberg. To view the box score, click HERE.
Greeley plays two games this weekend in a showcase at Peekskill HS. The first game is Friday at 5:00 p.m. against Narbonne High School (from Los Angeles).
